Date Night

Have you ever been waiting to be seated at a restaurant, so hungry you seriously consider walking up to a table and helping yourself to someone's appetizer, and then the host/hostess calls out a name and no one answers?

And then you think to yourself, would it be so bad if I lie and say it's me, "I'm Flaunderschloss party of two!"

Well, after you watch this movie, you might just consider stashing a bag of peanuts in your bag and waiting.

Tina Fey and Steve Carell are perfectly matched as "boring New Jersey couple" Claire and Phil Foster. Their relationship seems fine; they have pretty decent jobs, two kids and a scheduled date night every week. But after hearing a pair of their friends are splitting up because they feel more like perfect roommates instead of lovers, Phil and Claire decide to spice up their date night and head to the city. New York City that is.

But the fancy restaurant they are trying to get into books a month in advance so they are instructed to wait by the bar with no promise of a table, much less dinner or a drink.

When the hostess comes by asking for the Tripplehorns, party of two, Phil jumps at the opportunity to be seated. They clink their glasses and hope for a great night.

Instead they get a night of hell. Believing they are the Tripplehorns, two rough guys come in demanding Claire and Phil come with them. When they get outside the men pull guns on them and ask for the flash drive that they have supposedly stolen. Phil and Claire try to explain that they are not the Tripplehorns and they "stole" someone else's reservation to have a nice dinner. But these bad guys aren't biting.

Luckily Claire and Phil get away, but the rest of the night is filled with action and comedy as the two of them try to figure out what is going on, who the Tripplehorns really are and how the hell they are going to get out of the mess they are in.

This movie is so entertaining because Fey and Carell's comedy styles work so well together. The scenes are hilarious but not over the top, and you get a little action mixed in with suspense. I especially like the part where Phil, after stealing Wahlberg's Porshe to make a quick getaway, hits a taxi cab driver. Their cars get stuck together, and Phil has no choice but to keep going on in a high-speed chase through the city.

James Franco and Mila Kunis are equally funny as the white trash real "Tripplehorn" couple and Mark Wahlberg shows off his sexy abs and cut body as an old client of Claire's who tries to help them out of their pickle.

The movie, which was directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Cheaper by the Dozen)starts out pretty slow, but once Claire and Phil are confronted by the two bad guys and escorted out of the fancy restaurant, it is a wild ride until the end. I think the movie is a perfect "date night" movie to remind couples that whatever happens in their relationship or however comfortable it might be, as long as you love each other, it's never too late to add a little excitement!

Oh, I almost forgot the best part, MY BROTHER IS IN THIS MOVIE! Check him out as the guy sipping his wine behind Steve Carell at the restaurant.

Inception

Two months have passed with no movie reviews. What better way to start back again than presenting you with a movie that I feel is probably the best movie I have seen in a long time.

I have always been fascinated by the dream world and really enjoyed how director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, The Prestige) created it for this movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Tom Cobb, a man who specializes in entering people’s dreams and stealing information from their minds. It’s called Inception and Cobb is the best in his field. But a tragedy has kept him from being as good as he once was and he fails to deliver on his current job.

To avoid being “fired,” Cobb decides to disappear for awhile, but is convinced by a wealthy Ken Watanabe (Saito) to do one more job. Saito promises Cobb that once the job is complete, he will have the murder charges, of which Cobb insists he’s been wrongfully accused, dropped, and he will be able to enter the U.S. again and see his children. Cobb agrees and assembles a team to aid him with the tricky procedure.

But Cobb’s secrets are starting to get the best of him and he risks the lives of his team members as well as his own sanity.

The ensemble cast is incredible. DiCaprio is always good in my book and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is equally as good as his partner Arthur. Ellen Page, who plays Ariadne, an architect student, has a natural ability to mold into any character and holds her own with DiCaprio and Gordon-Levitt. Tom Hardy adds a nice charm as Eames, another team member and Cillian Murphy is fine as Robert Fisher Jr., the man who’s mind the team enters. Marion Cotillard is chilling as Cobb’s deceased wife who won’t leave his dreams.

Nolan’s visions of the dream world are awe-inspiring from the scenes where Page first enters the dream world and proceeds to create the architecture for the job to the mesmerizing end scenes where the dream world is tumbling round and round.

The suspense and action are great and there were many moments where I gasped and was literally on the edge of my seat clenching my fingers into my husband’s arm.

I went into this movie, feeling a little worried, like it might be too complicated and I wouldn’t be able to follow what was going on. But Nolan has a great way of explaining everything along the way and you get a sense that all this could be real. Maybe so much that you wonder if you are in a dream or not! ;)

The ending is probably my favorite part! You will see why, if you go see it. And trust me, you should!

Nine

I find it quite intriguing when actors who do not normally sing and dance in films are cast in a musical.

And this is not just any musical, but an ensemble cast complete with A-list actors and top-notch talent all around.

Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), is a film director in 1960's Italy known for his racy Italian films which have had a huge impact on the viewing world. But his last couple of films have been flops and Guido is feeling the pressure to make his next film, Italiano, an over the top hit. He has 10 days until filming begins, but hasn't written a page of the script.

Feeling overwhelmed, Guido tries some "remedies" to help him get back on track. He is examined by a doctor, advised by a priest, and pleasured by Carla (Penelope Cruz), his mistress. But nothing seems to give him inspiration and his slump is having negative affects on his working relationships while he tries to juggle the women in his life: his mistress (Cruz), his wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), his muse Claudia (Nicole Kidman), his loyal costume designer/assistant Lilli (Judi Dench, ever so elegant), a flirty reporter, Stephanie (Kate Hudson) and his mother (Sophia Loren) from afar.

But Luisa is getting tired of not being the lead woman in her husband's life and Guido risks losing not only his marriage, but his film career all-together.

The movie, which was directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago) is full of outstanding choreography and musical numbers. Each of the actors can really sing; even Daniel Day-Lewis has a charming singing voice. We've heard Nicole Kidman's velvety voice before in the movie Moulin Rouge and Fergie's vocal range is incredible as she belts out "Be Italian" as Saraghina, a woman from Guido's childhood. Kate Hudson brings a lot of spunk to "Cinema Italiano" and Penelope Cruz is seductive in her number "A Call from the Vatican."

My favorite, however, is Marion Cotillard. Her singing and acting in this film are heartbreaking, yet beautiful as we see her ever so faithful to her husband even though he in return is not.

I love how the musical numbers are filmed as each actress steps out from their scene into a kind of daydream and perform their songs.

The movie drags on a bit and though the singing and acting are superb, the film lacks a bit of excitement and flow. But it does have an old Hollywood-style feel to it, and I do like that.

If you liked Chicago, you will like this film as well, and it is worth it to see this much talent in one film.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

If you are a fan of Terry Gilliam films (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Time Bandits, 12 Monkeys, The Brothers Grimm) you would expect nothing less than a crazy and wild ride. And you would get no less in this film.

The movie starts out a little strange and it's hard to figure out what is going on at first, but once you do it is fantastic.

Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) travels from place to place with his daughter Valentina(Lily Cole), sidekick Percy (Verne Troyer) and assistant Anton (Andrew Garfield) promoting his "imaginarium": a world of imagination created out of the doctor's mind. All you have to do is buy a ticket and come on the stage that unfolds from the carriage the group travels in. When you walk through the magic mirror and enter the doctor's world, all your dreams come true.

The troupe however, is not having much luck promoting their act, scaring more people off than intriguing them. Meanwhile, we find out that Dr. Parnassus has some trouble brewing. Years before, when he was a monk, he was visited by the Devil (Tom Waits) who offered him a bet in exchange for immortality. Dr. Parnassus wins but starts to regret his victory when, at 1000 years old, he falls in love with a young woman and decides to trade the Devil his immortality for youth. The Devil agrees, but on one condition. If the doctor ever becomes a father, the Devil gets to take the child on its 16th birthday.
Valentina turns 16 in three days and the Devil is ready to collect. But not before offering Dr. P another bet, an offer the good doctor cannot refuse! If Dr. P can get five souls before the Devil does he gets to keep Valentina. The way they do this is by getting people into Dr. P's "imaginarium." While in there, a person will have the opportunity to choose between good and evil. It seems like an easy decision, but not when one is lured by the Devil's temptation.

But with business not exactly booming, Dr. P fears he will lose Valentina forever! But all that is about to change when the group finds a man hanging from a bridge one night. They cut him down and try to resuscitate him. He wakes up with no recollection of who or where he is. Valentina takes an instant liking to him and they decide to make him part of their gang.

The Devil recognizes the guy and tells Dr. P that his name is Tony and that he used to do charity work, but that's all the information he shares. Tony (Heath Ledger) convinces Dr. P to modernize his act and perform for rich people to make some money. Intrigued by Tony's power of persuasion, Dr. P agrees and before long business is finally booming! Dr. P quickly gets four souls and only needs one more! But not everything is that easy when the Devil is involved, and we learn that Tony is not exactly who he claims to be and every one's world, even in imagination land turns upside down!

This film was absolutely fantastic from the beautiful visions of the dream worlds to the magnificent performances especially from Heath Ledger. This was his last film, though he died before it was complete and Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell each fill in for his role. I had read they were going to do this and thought it might be a bit strange but it totally works in the film and they all do a great job.

Lily Cole is gorgeous and sweet as Valentina and Andrew Garfield is funny and charming. Both are fairly new to the acting world.

Terry Gilliam movies tend to go off the handle a bit and this film might not be for everyone. But it is good light fun and it's worth it just to see Heath Ledger perform. He was a magnificent actor, I wish that his life had not ended so quickly. Step through the mirror and explore this film!

Coming Attractions: Eclipse

Yes, the third installment of the Twilight series comes out in just a little over two months (June 30). (Insert teenage girls screaming here.) Oh, who am I kidding, whoo hoo!

Now, I can't say that the two previous movies are anywhere near oscar-worthy, but they do satisfy a desire to see Stephanie Meyer's characters put into motion on the big screen. Not to mention the eye candy of our two leading men, Edward the vampire and Jacob the werewolf vying for the heart of Bella the human.

In this story, Bella (Kristin Stewart) has Edward (Robert Pattinson) back and life slowly slips back to normal as she nears her graduation day and hopes that Edward will change her soon. But Jacob (Taylor Lautner) is not happy with that deal and tries to convince Bella that she would be much happier with him. While Bella struggles with her feelings towards both guys, Victoria, the vengeful vampire who has been hunting Bella, is creating an army that will force vampires and werewolves to work together to save Bella and the community of Forks.

This movie is sure to have a lot more action than the previous movies, but I think the audiences will be glad that Edward will be present more in this film. David Slade is the director for this installment and I am anxious to see how his film will turn out. He directed a fantastic film called 30 Days of Night in 2007 about vampires, so he is familiar with the genre!

Watching these movies is fun, but I highly recommend reading the Twilight book series in addition to watching the movies, they are wonderful!

How to Train Your Dragon

Action, suspense, comedy and a little romance mixed with feel-good fun are all rolled into one of the best animated movies I have seen in a long time. It's amazing how much emotion and enjoyment you can feel from characters that have been drawn onto screen with a pencil. (Or a computer, whatever.) The details, the action it was so awesome!

Hiccup (voice of Jay Beruchel) is a young Viking who doesn't quite live up to the standards set by his macho father, Stoik the Vast (voice of Gerard Butler), the leader of the village of Berk.

While everyone is off killing dragons that are ruining their city, Hiccup decides to prove that he is more than a clumsy, weak Viking and tries to capture the uncatchable Night Fury dragon. No one has ever seen this kind of dragon but it is the most dangerous and destructive of it's kind.

With the help of a catapult-like device Hiccup catches him, but can't bring himself to cut out his heart like a good, strong, manly Viking should do. Against his better judgement, he cuts the dragon lose, not sure if he will become dinner or not and the dragon flies off.

Meanwhile, back in the village, Hiccup's father and the other Vikings prepare for a mission to find the dragon's nest. While he is away, he orders Hiccup to join Dragon Training with other youths in the village in hopes that his son might have even an eyelash of hope of becoming a true Viking.

Between training, Hiccup wanders out into the forest one day and finds that the Night Fury dragon has not flown away after all because of an injury to his tail. Hiccup decides to befriend the dragon, who turns out not to be a monster at all. Little by little Hiccup gains the trust of Toothless, his new dragon friend, and learns more about dragons than the evil traits he has read about in books.

He takes these secrets with him to Dragon Training, although never revealing how he knows what he does and gains the respect of the villagers and his peers. But no one knows about Toothless and the adventures him and Hiccup have together. And when his father returns it is only a matter of time before Hiccup must reveal why he cannot kill a dragon.

Hiccup also finds out the reason why the dragons raid their village, and it is not because they are evil or mean. It is something much bigger than any Viking could imagine. But will Hiccup's father listen to him and understand? And will Hiccup ever become the hero he has always tried to be?

You will just have to watch and find out! It is so worth it!

Besides the great story line and action in the film, I love all the different characters. It's always fun to figure out who is voicing them and see how just their voice can bring so much life into the characters. But my favorite character has to be Hiccup with his determination to be who he is and prove himself no matter what. And everyone will fall in love with Toothless! He is such a cute dragon, it makes me wish I could just dive into the screen and fly through the skies with him.

You know a movie is that good when you wish you could be in it! I advise you to watch this in the theater, because you will feel that you really are there! I didn't see it in 3D, but the picture was still great anyway. It is good fun for anyone of any age!

From Dreamworks Animation, (Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda), directed by Dean DeBois and Chris Sanders (Lilo and Stitch).

Other character's voiced by: Craig Ferguson, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig and T.J. Miller).

Coming Attractions: Sex and the City 2

This is one of my favorite TV series and when I first moved to St. Louis and didn't have cable I watched it all the time. I just love the concept of 4 girlfriends talking about their love lives and no matter what they went through they had each other. I have a couple of those friends myself. Friends you can just tell anything to and they will love you no matter what. Even if you are as open as Samantha! Haha!

The series sadly ended in 2004. But it ended on a good note, Carrie got Mr. Big! The way it was supposed to be right?

Well, four years later, not satisfied with ending the series all-together, the writers of the show got together and made the show into a movie. Instead of a happily ever-after series ending we were taken to where the series left off into the next step of our girlfriend's lives. There were some surprises and tears but in the end Carrie and Mr. Big got married. The end.

Nope, now there is a sequel because we just cannot get enough and we just have to know what could happen next. At first I thought, alright, might be cute. But after seeing the newest trailer on http://www.imdb.com/, I am INTRIGUED, EXCITED, ON EDGE!!!

"What happens after you say I do?" is the question Carrie asks herself in this new film. It's been two years and the lovely ladies need a break from their domestic lives, well, three out of the four, Samantha is the eternal bachelorette, but she has an answer for them. A trip to Abu Dhabi! While there the ladies let loose, drink cocktails and Carrie runs into...AIDEN!!!

What??? I thought he was out of the picture! Not so, he is back and looking hotter than ever. What will happen with Big back in the States and the spark already fading in their marriage? Will they get it back?

Guess you will have to find out on May 27 when the movie comes to the "Big" screen!

An Education

Every so often I browse imdb.com for upcoming movies and while searching a couple of months ago I came upon this movie. I had seen Peter Sarsgaard in a couple movies like Jarhead and Shattered Glass and just really liked his acting style. So I clicked on the trailer and instantly fell in love with the movie's love story; a young girl falls in love with an older gentleman and he shows her the world! I didn't get to see the film at the theater and it seemed forever until it came out on DVD. It was worth the wait!

Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is a pretty and smart 16-year old girl who is what people would say "well beyond her years". She is living in suburban-London in the 1960's, bored out of her mind studying Latin and French, hoping to get into Oxford and dreaming of a life in Paris. Her parents, are very loving but very strict, wanting her to study hard and not waste time listening to French music records.

One rainy day, Jenny is standing outside, fresh from cello practice when a handsome man about twice her age (Peter Sarsgaard) drives up in a fancy car. He introduces himself as David and offers her and her cello a ride out of the rain because he loves music and doesn't want her instrument to be ruined. She agrees and is instantly hooked by his charms. The next day he sends her flowers wishing her luck on her upcoming music concert. Jenny runs into him the following day and thanks him for the flowers. He invites her on a date with him, a request her father disapproves of. But when David comes by to ask for her father's approval personally, both her parents are also swept away by his charms and agree to let her go.

David and Jenny meet up with his friends Danny and Helen (Dominique Cooper, Rosemund Pike) to see an orchestra and have dinner and drinks. Jenny can't help but fall in love with David's world of excitement, money, concerts, fancy restaurants and expensive clothes! She feels alive and is romanticized by all the glamour. David then convinces her parents to let him take her away for a weekend to show her Paris. Impressed by his cultural knowledge they trust his intentions and agree to let her go. Jenny feels as if her dreams are coming true. She leaves behind her studies and goes off to Paris.

Everything seems to be going well, but Jenny soon finds out how David earns his living and her confidence in him starts to dwindle. Jenny must decide between the boring life of her studies or the exciting life David has introduced her to. The decision is harder than she ever imagined as she, though smart and mature, reveals her innocence and naivety.

I love this movie so much because it reminds me of the infatuation with life and love I felt when I was a teenager. I remember learning some lessons the hard way, just as Jenny does in this story, but some lessons are worth the heartache.

Carey Mulligan is amazing in her first starring role playing her character with such poise and Peter Sarsgaard is smooth and charming. Both play their roles so naturally and effortlessly and the chemistry between them reminds me of an old-time Hollywood romance. This movie is full of other strong performances from Alfred Molina as Jenny's father, Olivia Williams as one of her teachers and Emma Thompson as the headmistress at her school.

I highly recommend this film.

Couples Retreat

What promised to be a pretty entertaining comedy fell quite short. The movie was written by Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau who have teamed up in a number of movies together and are usually hilarious and directed by Peter Billingsly, who played the BB gun boy in A Christmas Story. But somehow putting all of them together did not equal out to a good comedy. I love Vince Vaughn but in his last couple of movies (Four Christmases) he has not been as funny and his quick one-liners are getting kind of old.

Couples Retreat revolves around four couples (three married, one recently divorced with a new girlfriend) who are all having some problems in their relationships. However, some are more serious than others.

From the persuasion of their friends Jason and Cynthia (Jason Bateman and Kristin Bell), Dave and Ronnie (Vaughn and Malin Akerman) along with the two other couples decide to go on a paradise getaway called Eden. Jason and Cynthia want to go to couple's therapy while they are there to work on their failing marriage and the other couples think they are along to enjoy the island.

At dinner the first night, they are told by the hotel manager that they must all go to couples therapy or they will not be welcome to stay there. Thinking that these sessions will take up only a small part of their day, they all agree to stay and cooperate.

The rest of the movie goes on with each of the couples having their own sessions with therapists, and working on exercises that are supposed to help them work on their relationships. You can see how many of the scenes are set up to be funny, but somehow they just don't deliver. For example, a part where the couples are out in the ocean feeding tropical fish, (I'm not really sure the reasoning behind this exercise) two sharks start swimming around Jason and Dave. Dave gets all hysterical and spills the bucket of fish and blood in the water. He swims safely back to the boat and later talks excessively about his "near-death experience."

I just think Vaughn and Favreau go too far with some jokes and not far enough with others. It just feels like they want to put so many jokes into the movie, but are not sure how to make them flow. The casting of the couples, though played by talented actors just don't seemed matched-up that well.

Anyway, the ending was probably the worst with everyone coming together and making everything work out. Seems a little forced and predictable.

The only truly funny parts were from Marcel (Jean Reno, The Professional) who leads the couples therapy exercises, flouncing around in his tantric-like dresses and Salvadore (Carlos Ponce) who plays a hunky yoga instructor with methods that are a little inappropriate but add the comedic flair I was looking for throughout the movie.

If you are a die-hard Vince Vaughn fan, then watch it. If you are looking for good entertainment, pass this one by.

The Invention of Lying

Ah, to live in a world where no one can tell a lie! Everyone says exactly what they think without the worry of sparing other people's feelings. There is no flattery, no deception and no fiction.

This is the world that Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) lives in. We follow Mark on his date with Anna (Jennifer Garner), a girl he's had a crush on since he was younger. He takes her to a restaurant that is, as he says, not that expensive because he doesn't make that much money. Anna tells him right off the bat she is not very optimistic about the date and that it will not end in sex, much less a kiss because she does not find him attractive. He is chubby and has a snub nose.

Where most guys would be like, "screw this" and leave, Mark stays because he is used to this brutal honesty - it's in people's nature!

So, after a bad date, Mark goes to work the next morning only to get fired from his job writing screenplays. It isn't really that exciting of a job anyway. Without fiction, people can only tell stories about what they know, so all movies and programs are basically about history. Mark is stuck with the 1300's when the Black Plague was going on and his boss fires him because nothing else interesting happened in this century and the plaque is too depressing.

So jobless, girlfriendless, and snub-nosed, Mark goes home to his apartment where his landlord demands $800 in rent. Mark only has $300 dollars to his name. The landlord tells him he must be out in 1 day and to use the money he has left to rent a moving truck. While at the bank, something triggers in Mark's brain and he tells the bank clerk he has $800 in his account. She believes him of course because no one can lie and gives him the money.

Mark is shocked by this new found ability and though he doesn't know where it came from, he continues to tell more lies. This gets him in trouble when, after lying to his dying mother about what wonderful things the afterlife will bring, people at the hospital overhear and wonder how Mark gained all this knowledge.

The world is now in Mark's hands as he uses his ability to lie to become rich and famous and to impress Anna, who he hopes eventually will love him for who he really is.

This movie is very light, funny and heart-warming. What I love about this movie is the dialogue that comes out of people's mouths in their normal everyday life of telling nothing but the truth. The advertisements are funny as well. A commercial advertising Coca Cola has a guy telling people to buy their product because it's famous and everyone knows it although it is basically just brown sugar water. An advertisement on the side of a bus for Pepsi reads: Pepsi, when they don't have Coke.

Jennifer Garner is very cute and sweet in her role as Anna and Ricky Gervais is hilarious and you can't help but love him. Rob Lowe is great as the conceded, snobby co-worker that thinks he's better than Mark, genetically and intelligently.

Look for Edward Norton, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jason Bateman in hilarious cameos throughout the movie.

This isn't the best comedy in the world, but if you want a movie that's light-hearted and funny, rent this!

True Blood

It was last summer when I had first heard about the HBO television series True Blood. My brother, who has been an extra in a couple episodes for season 2, told me about it and so did my good friend Jessica. In fact Jessica is a pretty devout fan. She was reading the books that the show was based off of, had watched season 1 when it first came out and had the theme song as her ring tone on her phone.

Being that these are two reliable sources on my decisions of what to watch, my husband and I decided to rent the first couple episodes to see what all the fuss was about. At first, I was like, holy crap this is vampire porn. The show definitely does not lack in nudity and sexual situations. However, there was something addicting about the show, and like blood to a vampire we couldn't get enough of it!

Brad and I were hooked and watched the entire season in a couple days. Yeah, we're dorks!
Each character in True Blood is unique and their storylines keep you wanting more. An insatiable thirst for more episodes. So imagine our disappointment when, HBO-less, the second season had started and we had no way of watching it. BOO!

Luckily I did find a way to watch the season 2 episodes! And I can't wait for season 3. Now, some of you are probably thinking, oh gosh, not another vampire show/movie/book series. But this isn't just any vampire series. The interesting hook in the show is that humans know about vampires. They "came out of the closet" 2 years prior after the Japanese synthesized a liquid that resembles blood so they can live peacefully among the humans and not eat them. But as in reality, the world is not a perfect place and there are some vampires that prefer the real thing.

The show centers around a Louisiana town called Bon Temps where a waitress named Sookie Stackhouse meets the first vampire to grace the town. From there, literally, all hell breaks loose.

The first season is out and from what I have read, the second season should come out in late spring. Season 3 will start this summer on HBO, so you better catch up and trust me, you will like this show!

Zombieland

Ah, zombie movies. Gruesome, silly, addicting. Sorry, I love the movie Dawn of the Dead!
However, these movies always seem to have the same formula: someone catches this disease or virus that turns them into a flesh-eating monster and then they bite other people and create more flesh-eating monsters and then everybody is a flesh-eating monster.

Except for a select few who, somehow out of all the other people in the world, remain safe and spend the movie defending themselves and sheltering up in a mall or playground.

Hello Zombieland! Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland) plays Columbus, a neurotic, socially awkward loner trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. He attributes his ability of staying alive to following 31 specific rules he has made up along the way. A couple include cardio (staying fit so you can out-run zombies), double-tapping (taking time to shoot a zombie twice to make sure they're dead), and beware of bathrooms (when you're the most vulnerable!). We are reminded of the rules many times throughout the movie and I took notes...just in case!
Columbus soon runs into Tallahassee (Woody Harrellson) a bad-ass zombie hater with a soft spot for Twinkies. Instead of using their real names they call each other by the cities they are from or are heading to. So off they go driving to nowhere really, Tallahassee stopping at random grocery stores trying to find himself a Twinkie. At one stop they are conned by a young woman (Emma Stone) and her little sister (Abigail Breslin) who steal their vehicle and guns. They see these two girls later in the movie and they all decide to road trip together, their destination - Pacific Playground, duh! Because that's where you go in a zombie movie, an amusement park or a mall.

But all movie cliches aside, Zombieland is great entertainment! It's not your typical zombie horror-flick. Instead it provides a lighter, slapstick humor take on the genre. Eisenberg and Harrellson have great comedic chemistry. Stone plays her role as a sexy/kick-ass con effortlessly. Breslin is good too, surprisingly, since she usually acts in more dramatic roles.

My favorite part is when the foursome are looking for a place to crash in Hollywood and decide on Bill Murray's mansion and find that he is still alive! They hang out with him, watch Ghostbusters and play with proton packs. Probably the best cameo in movie history!

Watch it!

Movies to watch on Valentine's Day

When Valentine's Day comes around there are many movies to put you in the mood for love! Everyone has their favorites, but here are a couple of mine!

My number one pick is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The first time I watched this movie I didn't like it. Brad, my husband, loved it. So I thought I'd watch it again and after the second viewing I fell in love!

After a man named Joel (Jim Carrey) finds out on Valentine's Day that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has gone through a procedure that erases memories of him out of her mind, he decides to erase his memories of her as well. While his memories are being erased, he realizes he still loves Clementine and doesn't want to forget her. He then tries to hide her away in his other memories so that she won't be completely erased. While this is going on the workers conducting the procedure are dealing with love problems of their own. Jim Carrey never disappoints when he takes on a more serious role (see Truman Show), and Kate Winslet is lovable and fun as the quirky, impulsive Clementine. I love this movie for its originality and realness. I love how we can follow Joel through his sub-conscious in the memories where he and Clementine were once so happy to be together and how though their relationship didn't turn out well in the end, he still cherishes those good times. The title of the film comes from the poem "Eloisa to Abelard" by Alexander Pope, which Kirsten Dunst's character reads to her crush, the doctor who made erasing memories possible.

If this movie doesn't strike your fancy, here are a couple that might fit your style!

  • The Notebook - for any couple, any age

  • Casablanca - for a classic

Terminator Salvation

When I first saw this movie was coming out, I thought what I always think about sequels, "Oh crap not another one." And then I saw Christian Bale was in it, so of course, I had to see it. I LOVE Christian Bale. But, I cannot go into that right now because this is supposed to be about the movie.

Anyway, I am a huge fan of the James Cameron Terminator series, which includes 1 and 2. The third one I have not seen and really don't think I need to. This fourth Terminator movie was directed by McG who is best known for directing the latest Charlie's Angels movies and producing one of my favorite shows, Supernatural.

In this installment, the dreaded future that the Conners were trying to prevent in the first couple movies is happening. Skynet and the machines have taken over the globe and The Resistance (group of human warriors) is trying to stop them with John Conner as the leader. Conner is trying to find a way to stop the machines while also trying to find Kyle Reese who we found out after the first Terminator movie is Conner's father. Also introduced in this story is a terminator that looks like a human but does not realize he is a machine - he still thinks he's human. He is trying to help Reese find Conner and later finds out interesting information about himself! So everyone is running around trying not to get killed by the machines and looking around for everyone else. Pretty good time!

I thought the movie was fantastic. It keeps you involved, the action sequences and visual effects are great and most of the actors are top notch, especially Sam Worthington as the human-ish terminator and Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese. Christian Bale is always great in my book, but Bryce Dallas Howard seems miscast and is just kind of there in her role as Conner's wife. Anyway, what I liked the most about this film is how it ties in with what happened in the first couple films and how everything comes full circle. However, if you have not seen the first two films, you may be kind of lost as to what is going on, so I recommend renting them first.

Penelope

This movie came out in 2008 and was directed by Mark Palansky, kind of a newcomer to the directing world. According to imdb.com (best site ever!) he has directed a handful of films, Shutter being the only other one I had heard of. For not having that much experience, I think he did a pretty good job on this movie.
It stars Chirstina Ricci, James McAvoy, Reese Witherspoon and Catherine O'Hara.
The story is about a pig-nosed girl named Penelope (Christina Ricci). Poor Penelope! It wasn't her fault to be born with a pig nose! Because of a wrong her great-great-great (and a couple more of those) grandfather committed to a witch's daughter, a curse was put upon his family, the wealthy Wilherns. The curse was that the next daughter born in his lineage would be born with a pig face and the only way to break the spell is "for one of his own kind to claim the daughter as one of their own til death do they part."
Years and years and years later, Penelope is born. To avoid exposure to the outside world, Penelope's parent's fake their infants death and keep her hidden in their house.
She grows up and Penelope's mother (Catherine O'Hara), decides it's time to break this spell and find Penelope a wealthy young man to marry her daughter so her face will be normal.
All the men that see Penelope freak out and run at the sight of her. Enter James McAvoy! Could he be the one to love Penelope for who she really is and break the spell? Is that what will break the spell?
Penelope can't take not being out and about in the world so she runs away from home and the adventure really begins! I don't want to reveal too much more.
Though this is a fairy tale story, it never feels like a children's movie although it is appropriate for their age level.
I liked this movie very much! The actor's bring out the characters each very uniquely. Christina Ricci is perfect in this part and her and James McAvoy have a very cute chemistry. Catherine O'Hara, who I love, is hilarious as her crazy and a bit over-bearing mother. Reese Witherspoon is very cute as her Vespa-driving quirky friend. The mood of the story kind of reminds me of the movie Enchanted. It is very sweet and very light. The scenes kind of remind me of a Tim Burton movie, very bright and colorful!
The story flows along very nicely until the end. I kind of felt like everything wraps up pretty quickly and the outcomes are VERY predictable, but not in a bad way. Sometimes it's nice to watch a simple movie that's fun and makes you feel happy after watching it! So if you have some girlfriends over or maybe some nieces around I think this would be a movie that you would all enjoy. Guys - maybe not so much, but definitely a cute date movie. It is a good movie to remind us that beauty is more than a pretty face and that we should love ourselves the way that we are!

Movies!!!

Anyone who knows me knows I love movies. I love watching movies, I love talking about movies, I love movie trivia! My dream has always been to become part of the show business world somehow. But some dreams are best left to our imaginations. I don't think Hollywood would ever be the world that I've seen in my head.

But, I will not give up on that dream, maybe someday I will be brave enough to try it. For now, I will be an amatuer movie critiquer. Every day or every week (however industrious I feel!) I will be critiquing different movies on here. If you ever have any suggestions, questions or comments on movies I have seen or should see please feel free to let me know.

I am excited to get this blog started!
